Using the Session Launcher for a Linux Desktop
You can use Fermi customizations on your NIC to connect to a Linux
system and get a GNOME or KDE
desktop.
- Use the right-hand house icon "Fermi Home" to get to the Fermilab
Xterm REplacement Home Page
- Click on Fermilab Added Configuration.
- for Window Manager select Kerberos Session.
- press Submit.
- The X windows on your NIC will restart, and you will see the Session
Launcher
Untill you reconfigure, your NIC will now boot up with the Session Launcher.
You can use it as follows
to get a Linux desktop session:
- Click on the kinit button to get your kerberos ticket; this
will pop up a window in which you enter your principal name and password.
- Click on the klist button to make sure you got a ticket
- From the Command pulldown, select the /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients #
Linux entry.
- Fill in a username and hostname for where you want to log in
- click Connect.
- Be patient :-). It takes a few minutes for most of the desktops
to come up over the network.
