17GB disk install problem

Installed Quantum Fireball IDE 17GB disk. Attempts to fdisk give:

Disk /dev/hda: 247 heads, 228 sectors, 40681 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 56316 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Begin Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 1 1 1001 28186044 83 Linux native
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary:
phys=(1000, 246, 36) should be (1000, 246, 228)

No matter what sized partition I try to create, this is the result. If
I go ahead and create a file system, it either takes forever and just
hangs, or creates a file system smaller than the partition. Kernel
is 2.0.35. Any suggestions?
