Kernel rebuild for SMP

I'm having trouble rebuild the kernel for SMP support. It fails to
reboot with a "Kernel panic, unable to mount root" error message. Just
before that, I get an error that loading aic7xxx modules (unresolved
symbols). I understand that the problem is that the kernel is getting
rebuilt properly for scsi disk support, but I don't know how to fix it.
I also figure it has something to do with mkinitrd which I did without
incident. To make things worse, I when I reboot the original linux
kernel, it fails to load the ethernet module (which I must then do
manually) so I broke something.

I have done this before and I have the notes on how to do this, but
there must be some secret code that's missing. I'm looking for a little
more than "read the man pages" or another copy of the same pages kernel
compilation pages that I already have. I need a little more help than
that, it's been over 20 years since we had to "gen" the operating system
manually, I thought we got over that a long time ago.
