question about cron

I'm trying to set up a cron job on my Linux box, so that
I can archive files easily on a nightly basis. I've tried
testing cron with a simple sendmail command that should be
sent every hour, but it is not working. Perhaps cron is
not started on my Linux system, but I don't know how to
check that. Does anyone have an idea on how to proceed?
