big disk, part III: the good news

Kudos to Chris Green for correctly prescribing how to format
my large disk as a large disk. I followed his instructions
and the disk is now formated at nearly ~13 GB and it's looking
good. The only oddity is that if I count the blocks that df
reports, total minus used does not equal available:

Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
/dev/hda2 1018329 347299 618418 36% /
/dev/hda3 12314675 14 11674873 0% /h5a

The percentages are consistent with the numbers from Used and Available,
not from the 1024-blocks column.

Thanks to everyone who helped get this working. I'll send details
in a separate message for future reference.
