ftp problem

We find ourselves unable to ftp to any of our Linux machines.
The problem is related to NIS. We are running FNAL RedHat Linux.
All user accounts are NIS accounts which are served from an IRIX
machine. Ftp works to a local account, but not to any NIS account.
Is this a known problem? Is there a fix?
