Re: Provision of vanilla redhat-5.2 on linux-rep

I've setup the mirroring scripts on linux-rep to grab 5.2. However,
since linux-rep is not a "public" mirror, most attempts to ftp to
the RedHat site are rejected (too many users). I've requested
non-throttled access, but haven't yet heard back from RedHat.
Typically it takes up to a week to get a full mirror on a new release
because of all the traffic to RedHat's FTP site.

As before, I will mirror all the relevent updates and powertools for
x86.

linux.fnal.gov holds the officially supported FNAL version(s) of
Linux, derived from RedHat releases. Installations should use
this site (see http://www.fnal.gov/cd/unix/linux).

linux-rep.fnal.gov is run by the HPPC department as an "unsupported"
Linux resource. I intend to continue to mirror there the principle
Linux sites (tsx-11, sunsite, prep(GNU)), as well as distributions
of interests (RedHat, Debian, Slackware). These are meant to be
precise mirrors - so, anyone installing from linux-rep's distributions
is not getting the FNAL supported version of Linux. I can entertain
requests for other mirrors (I'm thinking about a S.u.S.E. mirror and/or
an XFree86 mirror now), but obviously this is limited by disk space.

linux-rep contains other resources:
- HTML versions of HOWTO's
- Linux Documentation Project books
- Linux Gazette e-zine
- various FAQ's
- RedHat 5.0, 5.1 (and soon 5.2) user's guides
- "Maximum RPM" book
- "unsupported" FNAL Linux software (such as mbone tools)
- search engine for the mirrors
- search engine for the documentation
- ssh RPM's (for fnal.gov only)

linux-rep.fnal.gov and linux.fnal.gov are not supposed to be in sync.
linux.fnal.gov, as I understand it, draws from linux-rep.

Any fnal.gov machine can NFS mount linux-rep mirrors (see ftp://linux-rep/
for instructions). Connie will have to speak to NFS mount access policy
for linux.fnal.gov.
